온라인 커뮤니티와 각종 SNS, 메신저 등이 일상을 지배해 점점 1대 다수 소통, 빠른 소통방식이 일반화되었습니다. 
하지만 소통의 깊이는 그만큼 얕아졌습니다. 이러한 흐름때문인지 ‘오글거리다’ ‘중2병’ '3줄요약' 등의 단어가 등장하게 되었고, 사람들은 점점 깊은 이야기를 하는걸 꺼리게 되었습니다.
하지만 기술이 발전했다고 해서 사람의 내면에 뿌리깊게 박혀있는 감성의 본질마저 바꾸진 못했습니다. ‘군중속의 고독’ 이라는 말이 어색하지 않은 이유는 이미 수많은 SNS 친구와 메신저 대화가 있어도 그 깊이가 얕아 사람들의 깊은 감성을 채우지 못해 느끼는 결핍 현상이 익숙해졌기 때문이라고 생각됩니다. 그렇다고 이러한 감성적인 소통을 할 창구는 마땅치 않으니 그 결핍을 더 많은 SNS친구, 더 많은 메신저 대화로 채우려고 합니다. 이러한 방법은 결핍을 더욱 심화시킬 뿐입니다.
‘밤편지’ 는 이러한 현대인의 감성적, 소통적 결핍을 질적으로 채워 줄 수 있는 서비스입니다. 여러명에게 보여지는 글을 쓰는것이 아닌, 단 한명의 독자에게만 보여질 편지를 쓰게됩니다. 한명에게만 보여지는 글이라 할말이 없어지는게 아닐까라는 우려가 있을 수 있지만 오히려 정반대 입니다. 여러명의 독자를 고려해야하는 일반적인 글쓰기와 다르게 한명만 고려하면 되기때문에 더 깊은 이야기, 더 많은 이야기를 할 수밖에 없습니다. 편지의 본질이 그러합니다.
‘밤편지’의 기능은 크게 세가지로 나눌 수 있습니다. 첫번째는 모르는 사람과 편지를 주고받을 수 있는 ‘누군가에게 보내는 편지’, 두번째는 자신이 알고있는 사람에게 보내는 ‘지인에게 보내는 편지입니다’
마지막으로, 더 많은 사람에 편지를 보일 수 있는 '공개편지'입니다.
‘누군가에게 보내는 편지’는 편지를 부치면 다음날 무작위의 사람에게 전달되며, 편지를 작성한 본인도 다른 사람이 쓴 편지를 배달받게 되는 기능입니다. 받은 편지에 답장하고 싶은경우 밤편지 전용 우편을 통해 답장할 수 있으며, 본인의 편지를 받은 상대방도 같은 방식으로 답장이 가능합니다. ‘누군가에게 보내는 편지’는 하고싶은 말이나 고민이 있지만 주변사람 혹은 SNS에 올리기 힘들경우, 자신을 모르는 사람과 솔직한 이야기를 주고받으며 힐링하고 소울메이트를 사귀고 싶은경우, ‘글’로 소통하면서 힐링하고 싶은 경우 등의 목적으로 쓸 수 있습니다.
‘지인에게 보내는 편지’는 전화번호가 등록되어 있는 지인에게 편지를 보내는 것입니다. 상대방이 밤편지 사용자가 아닌경우에는 문자를 통해 편지가 도착했다는 알림이 전송되며, 마찬가지로 전달에 하루 이상이 소요됩니다. 이 기능은 평소에 하고싶은 이야기들이 있었지만 카톡은 너무 가볍고, 이메일은 너무 업무적이며, 그렇다고 손편지를 쓰기엔 너무 부담스러울 때 사용할 수 있습니다. 기존의 메신저가 채우고있지 못한 공백을 채우는 것입니다.
'공개편지'는 일종의 게시판으로 내가 작성한 편지를 많은 사람들이 볼 수 있으며 그에 따라 더 많은 답장을 받을 수도 있습니다.
